Canmore Winter Carnival
The Canmore Winter Carnival is back for another year with 10 days of free celebrations and events. The carnival will include the International Biathlon Union Cup Races, Xterra Triathlon and Chandra Crawford’s Fast and Female. Ski and dog sled race events will take place on a snow covered Main Street and the public are also invited to bring their cross country skis to enjoy the set ski track on Main Street. Street hockey, ice carving, log sawing, and snow sculpting events will all take place in downtown Canmore throughout the carnival.

Knuckle Basher 2012

MEC Knuckle Basher is western Canada’s largest ice climbing festival with something for everyone. Take an introductory or advanced clinic, demo some gear, and catch an evening presentation. Never climbed ice before, but think it looks fun? This is your chance to give it a try! All ages welcome.

One thing you can count on is Canada Day in Canmore. Our festivities celebrate the special joy of being Canadian. Locals line up early for the pancake breakfast that starts at 7:30 AM. Main Street is jammed with people who come from all over southern Alberta to view the parade. Truly spending our national day in beautiful Canmore is a pleasure that should not be missed.

World 24 Hour Mountain Bike Championships
The very best one-day endurance mountain bike riders from more than 20 countries will converge in Canmore September 13 – 17, 2012 for 24 hours of grit, endurance and determination with the return of the World 24 Hour Mountain Bike Championships.
Categories for 2012 will include solo (male and female elite, single speed and age group) plus a two-person open and three-person coed category.

FIS Cross Country World Cup 2012
World Cup cross-country ski racing will return to Canmore in December, 2012. Canmore last hosted the sport’s best racers a week before the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver, when Canmore native Sara Renner delighted her hometown crowd by winning a bronze medal in the sprint event.
Canmore will be the site of racing for the weekend of December 15 & 16, 2012, with the added possibility of a mid-week race. Race formats are still to be determined, but it is anticipated that the Canmore competitions will include one sprint and two middle distance events. A final decision on race formats will be made by the International Ski Federation (FIS) in early June.
2014 Alberta Winter Games
In 2014, Alberta’s best young athletes will gather in the picturesque Rocky Mountains for the 20th Alberta Winter Games. The communities of Banff and Canmore will jointly host Alberta’s largest multi-sport competition.
Athletes ranging in age from 11 to 17 will compete in traditional winter sports, as well as various indoor sports such as volleyball, rhythmic gymnastics and wrestling. The number of participants is similar to an Olympic Winter Games, with more than 3,000 athletes, coaches and officials taking part.
